When you are planning to install signs for your restaurant, café or retail store, it's essential that you think, take your time and select the right materials, fonts, color scheme and other components carefully. Whether you want to highlight your business name, display your products/services or promote an end of season sale, the look, feel, content and aesthetics of your illuminated display or dimensional lettering matter a lot to grab the attention of passersby and passing vehicles.
Then, what principles of design should you consider to get maximum attention? Here are some of the things you can consider.

Research into Color Theory
It's not always necessary to use black and white; instead do some extensive research on color theory. This is important to understand what message is conveyed through the color used in your business signage. Say for instance, you want to promote an end of season sale, what color should you use? Well, red denotes urgency and it will be an appropriate color to highlight your sale. Again, you can use blue for a medicine store or spa as blue creates a relaxing feeling. So, research on colors properly. Your chosen shade should synchronize with the theme of your business.
Using Bright Colors & Good Contrast
Passersby or passengers in passing vehicles do not get much time to look at your pylons or illuminated displays. That's because they are passing by your store and only have a few seconds to notice what you want to advertise. This means you need to create an impact very quickly. If you look at other stores, you will find that most of them use bright colors to stand out from the rest. Choose shades that will contrast well with the background area. Always use a lighter background against a dark-colored font to create the best impact, and also to add depth and dynamism to your sign.
Think of a Powerful Message
It's not only designs or colors that make your storefront display stand out. The content or what message you are trying to communicate matters even more. When writing the message you want to convey, identify the unique selling proposition (USP) of your brand and products, and make that the focus to connect with your audience quickly. Take the content of your business sign seriously. Take some time to write, edit and revise your brand message so that it is powerful, catchy and memorable.
Keep It Big and to the Point
Your store front display has a lot of space to be used. This doesn't imply that you cram all of it with loads of information, making it look too crowded with text. Include only information that matters. Use big fonts, keeping your message concise and to the point. You need to grab the attention of passersby from a distance and attract them to your store entrance to learn more about your products/services. Therefore, when picking out fonts, avoid using highly curly or script fonts. Fonts that are too curvy may look beautiful, but extremely difficult to read from a distance.
Use the Right Materials
The kind of materials that you choose for your storefront display has a significant impact on its effectiveness. For any temporary business, you can use window decals and these will be displayed for a temporary period, like to promote a sale or an event. Again, if you are looking for long-term branding, it's prudent to use metal letters/dimensional letters in front of your retail store. So, choice of materials is extremely important and if you choose the wrong ones, your business may not even be noticed by passersby or your potential customers.
